Obed Lopez Lakeside CA Obituary, El Capitan HS Volleyball Player Died

The El Capitan High School community and all of Lakeside are mourning the heartbreaking and unexpected loss of Obed Lopez, who passed away on August 2, 2025, at the young age of 17.

A talented athlete, loving son, loyal friend, and a light in every room he entered, Obed’s passing has left a deep void in the hearts of everyone who knew him.

Obed was a senior at El Capitan High School, where he made a name for himself as a standout player on both the Varsity Volleyball and Varsity Soccer teams. Wearing jersey #1 on the court and #15 on the field, he brought unmatched energy, heart, and dedication to every game. In volleyball, Obed played the position of Libero, where he recorded an impressive 518 digs in the 2024 season alone, earning 1st Team All-Conference honors and serving as team captain.

He also played club volleyball at the highest level with San Diego Seaside’s 18-1 travel team, where he was the starting Libero, pushing himself and his teammates to excellence every day. Obed was known as a hard-working, coachable player who dreamed of continuing his volleyball career at the collegiate level. He had been selected to join the men’s volleyball team at Grossmont College.

But beyond athletics, Obed was known for something even greater — his kindness, humility, and vibrant spirit. He was fiercely loyal to his friends, respectful to his teachers and coaches, and deeply loved by his family. His presence radiated joy and positivity.

Coach Teresa Hodges, who mentored him throughout high school, shared:

“I witnessed firsthand the kindness, discipline, and infectious spirit Obed brought to every practice and game. He has impacted so many people in his life with love, laughter, and so many memories.”

Obed’s mother, who was always on the sidelines cheering him on, is now left with unimaginable grief. As one parent shared:

“Obed had all the awesome energy and light you’d wish for in someone freshly graduated from high school. He had his entire life ahead of him and a bright future awaited.”

A GoFundMe campaign organized by Coach Hodges is currently underway to support Obed’s family with funeral and memorial costs during this devastating time.

Obed leaves behind a grieving family, loving teammates, caring coaches, and a community that will forever remember his smile, his hustle, and the light he brought into their lives.

He may be gone far too soon, but Obed Lopez will never be forgotten.
